What You Can Do

▪ Become a member of P.E.T.S.  Membership fee is only $10 for a single or $20 for a family.  All fees go to help our shelter animals.

 

▪ Become a Foster Care Provider for an animal in need.

 

▪ Report neglected, abused, or stray animals immediately.

Always call law enforcement first.  Then notify PETS of the situation—641.431.1PET.

 

▪ Become a volunteer shelter worker.  The cats and kittens at our shelter need daily attention and we need more volunteers to help.  Just a few hours a week will make a huge difference.  We need volunteers to clean and we also need volunteers to play with the kitties.

 

▪ Become a dog walker for dogs that are being temporarily held at our shelter.

 

▪ Volunteer to help at a spay/neuter clinic at our shelter.  Volunteers are always needed to care for the animals after surgery.

 

▪ Learn how to live-trap feral cats and help trap cats for TNR spay/neuter clinics.

 

▪ Build a cat shelter for a local colony of feral cats or a cat tree for our shelter cats.

 

▪ Care for a colony of feral cats in your neighborhood by providing daily food and water.

 

▪ Sponsor an unowned cat or dog by making a donation.  A majority of the animals that come into our care are not in good shape and need extra medical attention in order to get them healthy and adoptable. 

 

▪ Make cat and dog beds and toys for our shelter animals.  Most of our animals come to us with nothing and it’s nice to send them to their new home with a bed of their own.

 

▪ Offer to bathe/groom an animal to get it ready for an adoption event.

 

▪ Attend special events with other PETS volunteers, like adoption events in Des Moines, local parades, farmers’ markets, and festivals.

 

▪ File papers at the shelter and do book work.  Accounting experts are desperately needed.
